Training app data

How much data does Strava use?

Usually less than people think for basic GPS recording, but live safety tools, maps, uploads, feeds, photos and race travel can make your wireless plan matter.

Source note: Strava support states that recording does not use data unless you view maps or use Live Segments or Beacon, and that syncing afterward uses some data. Strava is a trademark of Strava, Inc.; Rowkai is not affiliated with Strava.

The simple answer

Basic GPS recording is not usually the data-heavy part. Your phone can use GPS while recording, then sync the activity after you save it. Data use rises when you view maps, use live features, upload photos, refresh feeds, stream music or navigate race logistics.

Features that change data needs

  • Maps and routes: viewing or changing maps can use mobile data.
  • Beacon and Live Segments: Strava support says these require cellular data.
  • Uploads and feeds: finished activities, photos, comments and club updates all sync afterward.
  • Race weekends: travel, weather, rideshare, hotels and group messages often use far more data than the workout itself.

What athletes should buy

Do not choose a wireless plan only around one app's average data usage. Choose around your full training stack: Strava, Garmin, COROS, Apple Watch, music, maps, messaging, event apps and emergency communication.

Built for the whole training stack

Rowkai is wireless for athletes whose phones carry routes, safety, photos, race logistics and community.
